Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a clinical condition in which blood in the cerebral vessels is distributed to the subarachnoid
space due to trauma or vascular pathology. The quality of life is reduced in 69% of patients after SAH. Vasospasm and the
associated cerebral ischemia are the main causes of post-SAH morbidity. Animal models and human studies on this issue support
the notion that this problem is a factor-dependent physiopathological event. Various theories have been developed on spasmogens
that cause vasospasm and various studies have been conducted with some still undergoing and some planned for the future. The
studies have focused on nitric oxide, endothelin-1, calcium, hemoglobin and bilirubin degradation products. The purpose of this
article was to review the main mechanisms that cause vasospasm in the light of current literature.
