METHODS: This study was carried out in the surgical study center laboratory of the Ondokuz Mayıs University after taking the permission of Ondokuz Mayıs University Ethical Committee.
In this study, 12 adult, male Spraque-Dawly rats weighing varying 400-500 grams were used. Making a midline incision on the sagittal suture, bilateral 0.4 cm2 craniotomy area that mediated the middle frontal gyrii was formed. Then with the help of the lancet on the left side and a Fogarty Catheter on the right side, a two sided dissection was made starting from the middle frontal gyrus to the basal ganglions. On the fifth day postoperatively, thin slices of 10 micrometers were taken from the brains removed by perfusion n fixation technique. The preparates were stained by the Gallyas technique and inspected under a light microscope.
RESULTS: The similar axonal damage was determined in the rats compared qualitatively and evaluated by the axonal degeneration.
CONCLUSION: In this study it can not be shown that the Microballoon Dissection Technique is more valuable than the classical Corticotomy Technique in the aspect of axonal damage. From our sight of view , we support that this technique used alternatively in clinics should be supported in order to get a better development
