Factors that Increase the Risk of Bleeding in AVM and AVM and Aneurysm Coexistence and Risk Increase
1Sağlık Bilimleri Üniversitesi Ankara Numune Hastanesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Kliniği, Ankara, Türkiye
Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), dysplastic dilated arteries and veins are composed of capillary beds, occasional neural
parenchyma-free and abnormal vessels in which the arterial blood is discharged into the draining veins. The most common clinical
condition of an AVM is intracerebral hemorrhage. A polymorphism in the inflammatory cytokine IL6 was associated with an ICH risk
of brain AVM. The natural course of AVMs involves a 2-4% annual bleeding risk. Cerebellar and pial brainstem AVMs have a higher
risk of bleeding than supratentorial AVMs. The prevalence of the relationship between AVMs and aneurysm varies between 2.7 and
22.7%. In patients with AVM and aneurysm, the risk of bleeding was 7% in 1 year and 3% in those with AVM. There was a higher
risk of bleeding in small-scale AVMs. AVMs with a single drainage vessel were found to be at higher risk of bleeding in some studies.
All AVMs should be based on a balance between the risk of treatment that directly affects the patient"s age and general health, and
the risk of future bleeding or progressive disability when planning treatment, whether bleeding or not.
