Is Radiosurgery Effective in Hemangioblastomas?
1Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Ankara, Türkiye
Hemangioblastomas are rare benign, vascular tumors of the central nervous system that often occur in the posterior fossa. Central
nervous system hemangioblastomas can present as sporadic lesions or in association with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease.
Current treatment for solitary hemangioblastomas is microsurgical resection. However, radiosurgery is a safe and efficient treatment
option in critically located small to middle sized hemangioblastomas, whether symptomatic or not. Local tumor control rate
with radiosurgery is 74%-96% in hemangioblastomas. This review focuses on the efficacy of radiosurgery in sporadic and VHLassociated
hemangioblastomas in the light of the relevant literature.
