EVALUATION OF AUDITORY BRAINSTEM EVOKED POTENTIALS IN SEVERE HEAD INJURIES

²Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı In 28 patients with severe head injury and with Glasgow Coma Score below 8, brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were evaluated within the first 72 hours following trauma. BAEP abnormalities were found in 14 patients. III. and V. potential latencies and I-V interpeak latency in head injuried patients showed statistically significant prolonged duration when were compared with control group (p<0.00l).

BAEP abnormalities were observed in 5 patients of 9 exitus.

Generalized slowing in the EEG was determined in 26 patients. Brain edema was diagnosed on CT of 11 patients and it was associated with contusion, subdural, extradural, intracerebral or brainstem hematomas in other 17 patients.

In conclusion, even though significant BAEP abnormalities were found in our patients, they were not correlated with prognosis. Anahtar Kelimeler : Brainstem auditory evoked potential, Prognosis, Severe head injury
