Radiofrequency Rhizotomy in Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia
1Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Ankara, Türkiye
Trigeminal neuralgia (ITN) is the most common form of cranial neuralgia. Various safe and effective surgical treatment alternatives
for TN now exist, such as percutaneous, controlled radiofrequency trigeminal rhizotomy. Herein, the effectiveness of percutaneous,
controlled radiofrequency trigeminal rhizotomy (RF) is evaluated. Our experience regarding bilateral TN cases and patients who
have TN secondary to multiple sclerosis is also discussed. Percutaneous, controlled RF presents a minimally invasive, low-risk
technique with a high rate of efficacy. The procedure may safely be repeated if pain recurs. RF and Microvascular Decompression
(MVD) are the prominent procedures in order to relieve trigeminal neuralgia. On the other hand, the superiority of one to the other
has not yet been proven. The various procedures should not be alternatives but should complement each other.
