Neuroimaging of Gliomas

Gliomas account for approximately 70% of primary cerebral tumors in adults and have an incidence of approximately 6/100,000. Glial neoplasms originate from glial cells. Subtypes of glial cells include astrocytes, ependymal cells, and oligodendrocytes. Mutations are often seen in these highly proliferative cells in the brain due to ongoing gliogenesis and neurogenesis, and conversion to tumor stem cells is observed. The classification of central nervous system (CNS) tumors was revised by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016 using molecular parameters. As a result of the use of molecular parameters in the WHO-2016 CNS tumors classification, studies to determine the biological behavior of tumors with new neuroradiological imaging methods have accelerated. In this review, short pathological and molecular features and detailed radiological findings of gliomas in accordance with the WHO-2016 CNS tumors classification are presented under separate titles.
