Decompressive Craniectomy in Traumatic Brain Injury

In patients who develop traumatic brain injury, increased intracranial pressure accelerates secondary brain injury, resulting in
additional morbidity and mortality. Decompressive craniectomy is an effective surgical method to reduce intracranial pressure
in traumatic brain injury. This method can be applied as primary or secondary. Although this surgical method has been used for
hundreds of years, its complications are still not minimal. The right time, ideal patient selection, the right technique, and appropriate
cranioplasty after the surgery are therefore required in order to increase the effectiveness and prevent the complications of
decompressive craniectomy. Although there are many studies in the literature for all these parameters, there are still aspects that
are not agreed upon today. In addition, multicenter randomized trials, the results of which have not yet been revealed, are ongoing.
