Surgical Treatment in Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury
1Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Ankara, Türkiye
Although the physiopathology of spinal cord injury is still not fully understood, various treatment modalities are being developed
to stop this progressive process and stimulate regeneration. Since concepts such as definition and evaluation of the injury,
physiopathology, and epidemiology are the subject of different sections, this section will discuss the place, timing and prognosis
of surgical treatment. If any segment is affected, other organ injuries that may accompany a patient with spinal cord injury should
be evaluated very well. Injury to this highly sheltered area should be a warning that many other systems can also be damaged. In
incomplete spinal cord injuries, if the systemic table and vital values do not pose a high risk, we recommend early surgery, while in
complete injuries, we recommend early surgery to evaluate the risk/benefit ratio according to the systemic clinical picture and vital
signs. With this approach, we think that the opportunity for maximal functional return can be provided.
