1Okan Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul, Türkiye Posttraumatic deformities can develop after spinal fractures even if conservative and surgical treatments are applied. The most important factor in preventing these from developing is following-up patients with spinal fractures closely with the necessary radiological measurements. A few degrees of loss before reaching pathological dimensions can be experienced in most patients. In patients with progressive symptoms (pain, neurological problems) and deformities that could disrupt the spinal balance, the situation should be controlled with early intervention. If primary surgical treatment for the fracture is to be performed, the instrumentation setup should be designed to be strong enough to meet the loads on the anterior column in addition to posterior column tension. The surgeon"s knowledge and experience may not be sufficient in the surgical management of spinal fractures and posttraumatic deformities. It should be kept in mind that teamwork in which other non-surgical departments are involved may help prevent the possible complications and enable effective intervention in the case of complications.
