²Toronto Üniversitesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Toronto, Kanada The Chiari malformations (CMs) are a spectrum of hindbrain abnormalities ranging from simple tonsillar herniation through the foramen magnum to complete cerebellar agenesis. Even if all the CM types are associated with the hindbrain structures, their etiology and pathophysiology are different from each other. The goal of the treatment in symptomatic patients is to restore the normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics across the craniovertebral junction by decompressing the posterior fossa. The clinical presentation, imaging findings, and surgical techniques of decompression vary widely for each type of CM. In this study, we aim to review the terminology of CM, as well as the pathophysiology, clinical presentations, diagnostic methods, treatment strategies, and complications for each CM type.
