Endovascular Treatment of Spinal Dural Arteriovenous Fistulas
1Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Radyoloji Anabilim Dalı, İzmir, Türkiye
Spinal vascular malformations are a rare group of neurovascular diseases with an insidious onset and progressive course that can
confine patients to a wheelchair within a few years if untreated. Over the years, with the maturation of angiographic vascular anatomy
knowledge, the accumulation of surgical experience and, above all, the development of microcatheter and embolization technology,
superselective spinal angiography has made it possible to successfully treat many patients with spinal vascular malformation. The
biggest problem for these patients is that the disease not be considered in the clinical and radiological differential diagnosis, and
the diagnosis and hence the treatment is delayed. The sooner the disease is caught and treated, the higher the probability of full
recovery of neurological losses will be. The aim of endovascular therapy is to embolize the vascular malformation at the level of the
fistula.
