Dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is defined as an arteriovenous shunt between the dural (meningeal) arteries and sinuses, directly
through cortical or other sinus vessels. There is no nidus. DAVFs account for 10-15% of all intracranial vascular malformations.
The most common are those involving the transverse sigmoid sinuses, followed by cavernous and superior sagittal sinus DAVFs. A
complete angiographic (DSA: Digital subtraction angiography) study with examination of the external carotid artery (ECA), internal
carotid artery (ICA), and vertebral artery (VA) is required for diagnosis. Five types of DAVF have been identified as revised by
Cognard et al. Cranial nerve palsy occurs especially in DAVF of the cavernous sinus and DAVFs located close to the brainstem.
Tentorial DAVFs type 3 are generally characterized by high hemorrhagic risk and can be schematically divided into anterior and
posterior groups.
