Caroticocavernous Fistulas
1SBÜ Bursa Yüksek İhtisas Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Kliniği, Bursa, Türkiye
Caroticocavernous fistulas (CCFs) are abnormal arteriovenous anastomoses between the internal carotid artery and cavernous
sinuses. CCFs present with two different clinical pictures as direct and indirect fistulas. Direct or high flow CCFs occur between
the internal carotid artery and cavernous sinus; whereas, in indirect or low-flow fistulas, there are abnormal connections between
the branches of the internal or external carotid arteries. Seventy-five percent of the cases are traumatic. When a direct CCF is
confirmed, first-line treatment is endovascular intervention, which may be accomplished using detachable balloons, coils, liquid
embolic agents, or a combination of these tools. Modern endovascular techniques offer the ability to successfully treat CCFs with
low morbidity and virtually no mortality.
