Contemporary Applications in Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery concepts have developed rapidly in recent years and have also changed daily neurosurgery practice. Stereotactic radiosurgery devices, which are used to treat predetermined targets non-invasively without damaging the surrounding normal brain tissue, include the Gamma Knife device and stereotactically modified linear accelerators. Stereotactic radiosurgery uses the same approach as a standard neurosurgical procedure. Strict adherence to the principles of differential diagnosis, selection of treatment alternatives, pre-procedural, peri-procedural, and post-procedural management, and planning under the team leadership of the neurosurgeon are indispensable for stereotactic radiosurgery. The efficacy and safety of stereotactic radiosurgery have been proven in treating metastases, gliomas, benign tumors, vascular malformations, and selected functional disorders. New indications are currently being investigated. In the coming years, possible advances in stereotactic radiosurgery will enable further advancement and better patient care in ways we could not possibly imagine.
