Fusion has long been accepted as the gold standard treatment modality for intervertebral disc pathologies. However, adjacent segment disease (ASD) has appeared as a very common complication of interbody fusion. The exact etiology is still unknown. Fusion and a degenerative process have been suspected. Patients who suffer from ASD could experience severe axial pain and/or brachialgia. Additional surgery could be needed. The cervical disc arthroplasty-motion-preserving technique was developed to overcome fusion-related problems. However, arthroplasty is not free of complications, with implant-related problems and heterotopic ossification being the most common.
