Treatment of intervertebral disc pathologies includes excision of the intervertebral disc to obtain neuronal decompression and
to promote fusion. Fusion has long been accepted as the gold standard treatment modality for intervertebral disc pathologies.
However, adjacent segment disease (ASD) has appeared as a very common complication of interbody fusion. The exact etiology
is still unknown. Fusion and a degenerative process have been suspected. Patients who suffer from ASD could experience severe
axial pain and/or brachialgia. Additional surgery could be needed. The cervical disc arthroplasty-motion-preserving technique was
developed to overcome fusion-related problems. However, arthroplasty is not free of complications, with implant-related problems
and heterotopic ossification being the most common.
