Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy in Children: Differences from Adult Cases
1Kocaeli Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, Kocaeli, Türkiye
Despite technological improvements in shunt systems, 70-85% of shunted patients are still confronted with shunt dysfunction within
ten years. Thus, complications in shunt systems have resulted in a search for new alternatives for the treatment of hydrocephalus.
At the beginning of the 20th century, endoscopy has been introduced to neurosurgical practice. During the last three decades,
improvements in neuroendoscopic techniques and technology have made endoscopic third ventriculostomy the primary choice of
treatment for noncommunicating hydrocephalus. The success rate of endoscopic third ventriculostomy varies between 50% and
90%. In suitable hydrocephalus cases, endoscopic third ventriculostomy is a valuable treatment option that offers the patient a
shunt-free life. This treatment opportunity is extremely valuable, especially in the pediatric population in whom the development of
the central nervous system is continuing, and there is a long life expectancy.
