The principle paths or mechanisms that microorganisms use to reach the central nervous system do not differ between pediatric patients and adults. However, certain types of infectious diseases and the clinical picture that is caused by certain types of pathogens may show significant differences. While hematogenous and contagious spread forms the basis for pathogens to reach the central nervous system, conditions that serve to provide direct communication between the central nervous system and extradural area are other common causes. The current discussion is organized under the titles of subdural empyema, infections of venous sinuses, tuberculous meningitis and tuberculous osteomyelitis, brain abscesses, hydatid cyst, and other infectious diseases of the spine.
