They are a rare cause of mortality but can cause morbidity due to the mass effect or the hormones secreted. Although 95% of pituitary adenomas develop sporadically, it is possible to elucidate the underlying molecular etiology in 5%. The rate of detection of pathogenic variants increases in patients diagnosed at an early age, and those with a family history or an atypical adenoma. The most common genes associated with pituitary adenoma are AIP and MEN1 and the number of these genes has been increasing with recent studies. Genetic tests are important not only for the patient"s diagnosis but also for guidance regarding the follow-up of the patient and the family.
