Inferior Fronto-Occipital Fascicule (IFOF)

The inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) is a large white matter tract of the human brain with functional connectivity associated
with semantic language processing and goal-directed behavior. Despite electrostimulation studies of white matter tracts supporting
the role of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF) in semantic processing, little is known about the precise anatomical course of
this fascicle, especially its precise cortical terminations. A good knowledge of IFOF anatomy, especially in temporal lobe and insular
lesion surgeries, is extremely important in terms of preserving the integrity and meaning of speech in the dominant hemisphere.
However, further combined anatomical (dissection and Diffusion Tensor Imaging) and functional (intraoperative subcortical
stimulation) studies are needed to clarify the full involvement of each IFOF subcomponent in semantic processing.
