There is still some hesitation, especially regarding the referral of pediatric patients for this purpose. In this regard, we aim to share the long-term follow-up data of operated patients in our clinic.
MATERIAL and METHODS: Pediatric patients (age ? 18 years) diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy by Pediatric Neurology specialists at Marmara University between 2010 and 2023 and who underwent surgical treatment by the Department of Neurosurgery at Marmara University after evaluation in the epilepsy surgery council were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: After review, 18 cases were included for analysis and the mean preoperative follow-up period of the patients was 4.8 years (range 1-17.5 years). With the exception of one patient, the postoperative follow-up period of the patients was over 1 year, with a mean follow-up period of 3.15 years. The mean age of the patients undergoing surgery was 10 years, ranging from 20 months to 18 years. The gender of the patients was evenly distributed. In terms of postoperative seizure control, 72.2% of patients were in Engel class I, 16.7% in Engel class II, 5.6% in Engel class III, and 5.6% in Engel class IV.
CONCLUSION: Epilepsy surgery for drug-resistant epilepsy in pediatric cases is an effective and safe treatment approach. It should be managed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of an epileptologist or pediatric neurologist, neurosurgeon, neuroradiologist, and neuropsychiatrist.
