Foreign Body Mimicking Spinal Tumor: A Case Report
Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul
Few case reports of forgotten foreign bodies after surgery exist in the
neurosurgery literature. Asixty-year-old female patient, who had been operated
on with a diagnosis of T12 compression fracture 20 years ago, was admitted to
the hospital with 5-months-long low back pain and difficulty in walking. On the
radiological imaging studies, a tumor-like mass located extradurally was seen
just below the operation area. She was operated on with a diagnosis of spinal
tumor; however the surgery revealed a forgotten sponge during the first
operation. On pathological investigation of the tissue specimen no neoplasia
was encountered. It has been concluded that a foreign body forgotten during
surgery could mimic a tumor clinically and radiologically even after 20 years.
