THE TETHERED CORD SYNDROME

Çukurova Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroşirürji ABD, Balcalı / Adana The tethered cord syndrome consists of an abnormally low conus medullaris tethered by diastematomyelia, lipomeningomyelocel, short and thickened filum terminale and postoperative fibrous bands or adhesions. Neurological and urological symptoms and progressive spinal or foot deformities are seen in tethered cord syndrome. Presenting signs and symptoms in tethered cord may be delayed in adolescence period. Pain and urological symptoms are commonly seen in adult tethered cord syndrome whereas cutaneous findings, foot deformities and scoliosis are commonly seen in childhood tethered cord syndrome. In this study, the management of 38 patients that administered to our department with tethered cord syndrome between 1993-1999 are presented together with the literature.
