Objective: Movement is one of the basic features of the spine. While this function is sometimes restricted by diseases or operations, we can also observe increased segmental motion in some cases. Routinely, although required investigations are performed in cases of suspected instability, objective measurements and demonstration of restricted motion are not performed even in patients who have apparent movement restriction. This article aims to review the current perspectives regarding indications, methods and the reliability of spinal motion measurements.

Methods: Review of current literature on spinal motion measurements.

Results: Today, high-technology 3D motion analysis devices are used in addition to classical ways of spinal motion measurement such as radiologic methods and mechanical goniometers/inclinometers. By the use of such devices, one can obtain more definite and reliable measurements.

Conclusion: As more and more spinal fusian operations are performed today, measurement of spinal motion is becoming increasingly important whether in evatuating instability or in measuring motion restriction related to these operations.
