METHOD: A 43-year-old man presented with a 1-year history of weakness and numbness of his left foot. He had had a car accident 3 years ago. His symptoms had gradually worsened and resulted in a foot drop. Laboratory investigations revealed peroneal nerve compression at the caput fibula level. During surgery a venous aneurysm on the popliteal vein, which was compressing the peroneal and tibial nerves was explored in the popliteal fossa and resected completely. Following the operation his symptoms improved within some months.
CONCLUSION: Venous aneurysm should be included in the differential diagnosis in peripheral neuropathy patients with a history of trauma and also with a subcutaneous mass. The diagnosis can be made with duplex ultrasound scanning, a simple and safe method.
