4Eskisehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi, Tip Fakültesi Nöroloji Anabilim Dali, Eskişehir OBJECTIVE: It is still controversial that there is a correlation between the atmospheric profile and the occurrences of the spontaneous intracranial hemorrhages. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the spontaneous intracranial hemorrhages and the daily changes in atmospheric pressure and ambient temperatııre.
METHODS: Retrospective analyses of the ninety-nine admissions with spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage during one-year period were used. Only spontaneous bleedings other than trauma were included. Daily readings of the atmospheric profile in our region (Eskisehir / Turkey) were obtained from Turkish State Meteorological Service. Nonparametric statistics were used for data analysis.
RESULTS: Of these 99 cases, 56 were subarachnoid hemorrhage and 43 were cerebral hemorrhage. Median age was 59,3 years (range, 12 to 90 years). The number of the cases with angiographically proven aneurysmal ruptııre was 23. Statistical significant correlation was found between the daily change in atmospheric pressure and the age of cases. There was also a correlation between the lower daily temperature and the number of events per day.
CONCLUSION: In contrast with the common belief, our study showed that the daily changes in atmospheric pressure lead the intracranial hemorrhage in younger people more than elderly. There was also higher risk in cold days. We attempted to clarify possible reasons of the results, and emphasized that it needs further investigation in other regions.
