AIM: Hydrocephalic children have difficulties with intellectual skills, especially regarding non-verbal performance. This study aimed to explain which intellectual skills are affected by hydrocephalus.

MATERIAL and METHODS: Twenty-six hydrocephalic children with shunts who had not yet undergne shunt revision were compared with 26 healthy childre using WISC-R. The test performance levels were analysed statistically by MANOVA (Multivariate Analysis of Variance).

RESULTS: Hydrocephalic children had difficulties with verbal and non-verbal difficulty than verbal (p<.001). The localization of the shunt catheter (frontal, posterior, parietal), sex, age, type of etiology for the hydrocephalus (eg. triventricular hydrocephaly, myelomeningocele) did not affect the performance levels statistically (p>.05).

CONCLUSION: Hydrocephalic children should be assessed for intellectual level and attention deficits before and after the surgery and neuropsychological rehabilitation should be provided to ensure the maximum possible social and academic performance in the future.
