4 Bakırköy Ruh ve Sinir Hastalıkları Hastanesi, III. Nöroşirürji Kliniği, İstanbul, Türkiye AIM: Detailed knowledge of the supra- and infratentorial surgical neuroanatomy will provide the three dimensional anatomy of the brain and the skullbase to the neurosurgeon like a roadmap during surgery, regardless of the choice of approach to the pathological lesion.
MATERIAL and METHODS: Thus, the studies issuing microsurgical anatomy in neurosurgery residency may far be more important than in any other surgical branches. There is no other practical research method that affects directly the surgical outcome in the neurosurgery practise than microneurosurgery.
RESULTS: The main aim of this article series which is made up of three sections is to summarize the relatively wide area of supra and infratentorial and skull base neuroanatomy with respect to surgical approaches in neurosurgical perspective.
CONCLUSION: In this first part of the series, the authors discuss the microsurgical anatomy of the cerebellum, the brainstem and the fourth ventricle and the commonly applied surgical approaches.
