MATERIAL and METHODS: Surgical operations were conducted on 37 patients due to their scalp and calvarium lesions in the main Department of Neurosurgery within Fırat University Hospital between January 2004 and 2009. Etiological, epidemiological and clinical characteristics were thoroughly examined retrospectively.
RESULTS: Out of the 37 patients, we diagnosed a benign lesion in 25 patients and malignant lesion in 12 patients. The benign lesions were lipoma, fibrous dysplasia, hemangioma, osteoma, epidermoid cyst, dermoid cyst, fibroma, and intraosseous meningioma. Out of the malignant lesions, eight were metastasis, two were calvarial primary Eosinophilic granuloma, one was calvarial primary Ewing's sarcoma, and the other one was scalp's primary proliferative trichilemmal tumor.
CONCLUSION: There is a risk of malignancy, although small, in scalp and calvarium lesions. Cases must be subjected to preoperative radiological evaluations. The needle biopsy and surgical excisional materials have to be histopathologically examined. Radical resection and cranioplasty are the most important parts of the treatment.
