Removal of Intradural Tumors with Hemilaminectomy
Erciyes Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, Kayseri, Türkiye
The traditional approach to intradural spinal pathology is via total laminectomy.
Total laminectomy may cause spinal instability and kyphosis due to the damage to
the musculoligamentous structures and posterior bony elements. Spinal column
deformity occurred in children, adolescents and young adults. The incidence of
spinal deformity is higher in children than in adults. Fusion may be required to
correct post-laminectomy deformity and to stabilize the spine. The most common
sites of postlaminectomy deformity are the cervical and thoracic spine. Although
laminoplasty decreased spinal instabilitiy and deformity, it didn't to stop. After use
of operation microscope, intradural neoplasms can be safely and effectively treated
with hemilaminectomy techniques. Potential reduction in blood loss, hospitalization
and disruption to local tissues suggest that, in the hands of an experienced surgeon,
this technique may present an alternative to traditional open tumor resection.
