2Selçuk Üniversitesi, Meram Tıp Fakültesi, Nöroşirürji Anabilim Dalı, Konya, Türkiye AIM: Agap between the languages spoken in the university, administrators and the language spoken by people was created in Ottoman period. We wanted to identify the current situation in the language of neurosurgeons.
MATERIAL and METHODS: The title and the beginning of the objectiveintroduction sections of the posters and the oral presentations in the books of 1988, 1998, 2008 Congress of Turkish Neurosurgery Association were reviewed for Turkish. 1040 words in 1988, 5088 words in 1998 and 7091 words in 2008 were evaluated.
RESULTS: The rates of foreign words in total words were 27,3 % in 1988, 35,8 % in 1998 and 36,8 in 2008. The growth rate of the foreign words was significant (p<0.001). The ratio of foreign words in titles was always higher than the words in the objectiveintroduction sections (p<0.001). It was also observed that there were irregularities in spelling of foreign words. The foreign words could lead to longer and meaningless sentences, and break grammar rules. Moreover, the translation and writing errors were found.
CONCLUSION: Unfortunately, this study indicates that the use of foreign word disease which is seen in the some educated aroused again. Turkish is a suitable language for science with various features. The insufficiency is caused by lack of the educated people.
