3S.B. Onkoloji Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Radyoloji Bölümü, Ankara, Türkiye AIM: To evaluate the clinical, radiological and pathological properties of 56 patients diagnosed as intracranial meningioma between the years 1999 and 2010.
MATERIAL and METHODS: Age, gender, symptoms, localization of tumor and histopathological diagnoses were evaluated.
RESULTS: Age interval was between 21 and 75. 41 of the 56 patients (73.3 %) were female. The most common experienced symptoms were headache (69.6%), seizure (21.4%) and motor deficit (19.6%). Tumors were mostly settled to convexities(50%) and parasagittal regions (28.5%). Histopathological diagnoses were classified as follows; Meningothelial (30.3%), transitional (19.6%), fibroblastic (12.5%) and psammomateous (10.7%).
CONCLUSION: Due to the rapid developments of the diagnostic tests for intracranial meningiomas, it is getting easier to diagnose early and cure totally. Tumor size and symptoms are the two most important factors that indicate the treatment method of meningiomas. Asymptomatic patients especially advanced age and skull base tumors with high mortality and morbidity are much more suitable for close observation. MRI follow-up on 3rd, 6th and 12th months interval can be a good option. Because of the rapid development rate, young patients and non calcified tumors should be offered some type of treatment modality.
