Recurrences of Intracranial Meningiomas: Causative Relations and Surgical Management Decision

Meningiomas account for approximately 20 % of all primary intracranial tumors. Although most meningiomas, which are tumors that grow
from arachnoid cap cells, are benign (80 %) and grow slowly, they also tend to recur even after radical resection. Benign meningiomas have
a recurrence rate about 7-25%. Most recurrences are caused by tumors that cannot removed with involved dura and bones. The operation
performed for a recurrent meningioma should be individualized in respect of the conditions which caused difficulty in first operation; the
anatomical structures were disturbed by the previous surgery and the structural relations that were created by tumor progression.In this review, we summarize the causes and incidence of recurrences in intracranial meningiomas and the suitability and limitations of their surgical management.
