MATERIAL and METHODS: The number and cost of major spine procedures were analysed based on the data achieved from SGK (Social Security Administration of Turkey).
RESULTS: A total of 84.615 and 92.843 spine procedures were performed in 2008 and 2009, respectively. 54.354 and 59.619 lumbar discectomies were performed in 2008, and 2009, respectively and form 64.2 %, and 64.2% of all spine procedures in the relative years. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion were performed in 5.356 and 5.857 cases in 2008 and 2009, respectively. 13.209 and 13.498 thoracolumbar instrumentations were performed and form 15% and 14.4% of all spine procedures in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
CONCLUSION: Lumbar discectomy currently forms 2/3 of all spine procedures. Thoracolumbar instrumentation makes up almost 15% of all spine procedures. Despite an increase in the number of spine procedures, a decrease was detected in the cost of the procedures.
