3KKTC Askeri Hastanesi, Nöroşirürji Bölümü, Lefkoşe, Kuzey Kıbrıs TC AIM: The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphometric measurements including the inner and outer diameters of the pedicle, the vertebral corpus and the pedicle length, and pedicle angles from the levels of L1 to L5 vertebrae.
MATERIAL and METHODS: A total of 1000 pedicles from 100 patients were examined by three-dimensional computed tomography. Inner and outer diameters were measured between the inner and outer layers of the bone cortex of the pedicle. Screw length was measured from the beginning of the lateral border of the facet joint through the midline of the thickest part of the pedicle extending to the anterior cortex of the vertebral body. The angle of the previously mentioned plane to the midline of the vertebrae (screw angle), the length from facet joint to the junction of the corpus and the pedicle (pedicle length) were measured.
RESULTS: Inner/outer diameters and transverse pedicle angle showed an increase and pedicle/screw length ratio showed a decrease from L1 to L5. The longest length of the screw was at the L2 and the longest pedicle length was at the L1 level.
CONCLUSION: Morphometric measurements showed that the lower lumbar vertebrae that carried more weight were shorter but wider.
