Evaluation of Motorcycle Accıdents Followed by Antakya State Hospital Intensive Care

Antakya Devlet Hastahanesi, Beyin Cerrahisi Bölümü, Hatay, Türkiye AIM: In this study we aimed to evaluate the features of motorcycle injuries and explore the relationship between cause and effect. admitted to our emergency department and treated in intensive care.

MATERIAL and METHODS: The study was performed retrospectively between the dates of 2009 and 2011 and this retrospective study included 58 patients (54 males, 4 females; mean age 21 years; range 14 to 79 years) who were hospitalized for injuries caused by motorcycle accidents. and required intensive care.

RESULTS: The frequencies of injuries in descending order were as follows: musculoskeletal system injuries (n=40, 68,9%), skull injuries (n=54, 93,1%), maxillofacial injuries (n=54, 93,1%), thoracic (n=3, 5,1%), vertebral (n=2, 3,4%), and abdominal (n=6, 10,3%) injuries. Motorcycle accidents resulted in mortality in 42 patients (72,4%) including 4 female patient (100%).

CONCLUSION: To prevent the injuries due to motorcycle accidents; driver education must be considered, drunk drivers must be prevented from driving, helmet usage must be encouraged by drivers and passengers. Anahtar Kelimeler : Motorcycle accident, Intensive care, Retrospective
