Isolated Dorsal Scapular Nerve Lesion Due to Penetrating Injury: Case Report
GATA Haydarpaşa Eğitim Hastanesi, Beyin Cerrahisi Servisi, İstanbul, Türkiye
Isolated Dorsal Scapular Nerve (DSN) lesion is a peripheric nerve lesion quite rarely seen. Trauma in etiology happens due to repetitive abnormal
scapula movements and iatrogenic reasons. DSN injury due to traction and extension is the most probable pathomechanism. Shoulder ache
and limit of movements in shoulder are primary symptoms that help diagnosis of dorsal scapular nerve damage before development of
muscular atrophy. The nervus thoracicus longus and nervus accessorious lesion, which cause shoulder ache, should be considered in differential
diagnosis in other pathologies, such as neuralgic amyotrophy, C7 radiculopathy, tendinitis, trauma and degenerative diseases. While partial
or total peripheric nerve lesions developing due to mass lesions and cuts are cured surgically, peripheric nerve damages due to extensive use
are cured through physiotherapy modalities. In this presentation; a case of right shoulder ache and weakness, connected to isolated dorsal
scapular nerve neuropathy due to penetrating injury is discussed.
