Gülhane Askeri Tıp Akademisi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Ankara, Türkiye Shunt systems are the main tools in the treatment of hydrocephalus. Although many technological improvements had been achieved, ideal shunt has not been developed yet. The main reason of this situation is that the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation, dynamics and shunt physiology are not well understood. The best way to learn the shunt physiology is to know the fluid dynamics and CSF dynamics. The aim of this review is to present the shunt systems, to point out the CSF circulation and dynamics and to elucidate the shunt physiology under the light of these factors.
