MATERIAL and METHODS: The number and cost of major spine procedures were analysed based on the data achieved from SGK (Social Security Administration of Turkey).
RESULTS: A total of 91.662, 110.520 and 137.756 spine procedures were performed in 2010, 2011 and 2012, respectively. A total of 60.868, 71.397, and 82.426 lumbar discectomy procedures were performed in 2010, 2011 and 2012, respectively, making up 66.4%, 64.6% and 59.83% of all spine procedures in the respective year. Anterior cervical discectomy (± fusion) was performed in 6.024, 7.713 and 10.142 cases in 2010, 2011 and 2012, respectively. 14.076, 18.736, and 25.725 thoracolumbar instrumentation cases were performed in 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively, making up 15.36%, 16.95% and 18.67% of all spine procedures in the respective year.
CONCLUSION: Lumbar discectomy currently makes up almost 60% and thoracolumbar instrumentation almost 20% of all spine procedures. There is a remarkable increase in the number of spine instrumentation in recent three years.
