MATERIAL and METHODS: Twenty-eight adult brains obtained from routine autopsies were used in this anatomical study.
RESULTS: Hypoplastic VA was observed at rates of 14% on the right, 3.5% on the left and 3.5% bilaterally. Fenestration was observed in the proximal part of the basilar artery (3.5%) in one sample and between the middle segment of the basilar artery and the vertebral artery in another (3.5). The ASA (14%) originated from the VA as a single ramus and then coursed downwards in four samples. The ASA coursed downwards by dividing into two separate branches in eight samples. The observed variations in the superior cerebellar artery were early bifurcation (7% on the right, 14% on the left) and fenestration (3.5% on the right, 14% on the left, 3.5% bilateral).
CONCLUSION: In order to minimize the possible complications, it is important to take into account the variations in the vertebrobasilar system while planning endovascular and surgical procedures for pathological processes in the vertebrobasilar junction, ventral medulla and distal to the vertebral artery.
