MATERIAL and METHODS: Patients with the diagnosis of cervical disc herniation operated for a single level between 2004 and 2006 were included in the study. A total of 33 cases operated with iliac bone graft were analyzed in terms of true fusion and VAS scores.
RESULTS: There were twelve (57.1%) males and 9 (42.9%) females. The mean age was 44.8 (34-60) years. Seventeen patients suff ered from radiculopathy and 4 cases had myelopathy. Mean preoperative VAS score was 8.6 and the mean postoperative score was 1.9 (p <0.05). X-ray studies on follow-up demonstrated fusion in all patients. Cervical lordosis was 9.5° preoperatively and 15.5° postoperatively and the diff erence was statistically significant (p<0.05). The mean height of the discectomy levels was 5.44 mm preoperatively and 4.05 mm postoperatively and the diff erence was again statistically significant (p<0.05).
CONCLUSION: An auto graft placed in the space following discectomy provided immediate biomechanical improvement, facilitated fusion and osteophyte resorption, and expanded the foraminae.
