Associated disorders of the Chiari malformation type 1 (CM1) should be well defined to better understand the etiology. The deformation of the posterior fossa as a result of insufficient development of paraxial mesoderm leading to small hindbrain is one of the mechanisms. Acquired CM1 and congenital mechanisms, recently suggested on a genetic basis, are the others. Cerebellar tonsillar herniation and the relationship between the CM1 and the associated pathology could be better understood by classifying these disorders according to the underlying mechanism. We evaluate CM1 and the associated pathologies within this framework in this review. Anahtar Kelimeler : Posterior fossa, Chiari malformation type 1, Etiology, Surgical treatment, Tonsillar herniation
