New intraoperative technologies have been used for a long time in neurosurgery to reduce complication rates and to increase the extent of resection of tumors. In addition to neuronavigation and intraoperative imaging techniques, fluorescein-guided neurosurgery has emerged recently as a new modality. This technology helps to enable increased extent of resection and decreased complication rates in tumor surgery, and also to view vascular flow patterns is vascular surgery. In aneurysm surgery, there is the possibility to reposition the aneurysm clip to reduce complications with the use of this technology. Herein, we reviewed the three most commonly used fluorescein media consisting of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), indocyanin green (ICG) and sodium fluorescein (Na-Fl) in detail.
