With the increasing interest in minimally invasive techniques, interest in the use of intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (ioMRI) technology in interventional procedures and neurosurgical practice has also increased. Such use is especially advantageous in neurosurgical procedures because of real time multiplanar imaging and excellent soft tissue resolution. It is difficult to access the patient and the surgeon"s ability to maneuver is low with conventional horizontal fielded magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, due to the narrow area. The technique also does not allow the use of long instruments and requires the use of MRI-compatible devices during operation. Many open MRI systems and appropriate surgical technology have therefore been developed for use in interventional procedures. When using ioMR-guided neurosurgery, the magnetic field strength varies between 0.12T and 3T. As the magnetic field strength increases, the image quality and functional improvement also increase. Controlling the amount of tumor resected during neurosurgical procedures increases the confidence in surgery. At the same time, maximum tumor resection can be performed and the functional areas of brain can be protected.
