Functional neurosurgery has been used in the treatment of essential tremor for nearly a century. Lesional surgery and deep brain stimulation are the two techniques with proven efficacy in essential tremor surgery. Among surgical therapies for essential tremor, magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) enables creating thalamic lesions with diameters of 2-6 mm and 1 mm precision, without the need for general anesthesia and a surgical incision and with a low adverse effect profile. This review aims to emphasize the efficacy, safety, and adverse effects of U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved MRgFUS treatment in essential tremor along with a summary of its promising role in other neurological conditions.
