The Classification of Central Nervous System Tumors- From Past to Date

1Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar Üniversitesi, Tıbbi Patoloji Anabilim Dalı, İstanbul, Türkiye The World Health Organization has published four editions of the Classification of Central Nervous System (CNS) Tumors in the years 1979, 1993, 2000, 2007, and the updated 4th edition in 2016. However, the knowledge on brain tumors is being renewed almost every day. The International Society of Neuropathology (ISN) has decided to publish some guidelines for the current neuropathology practice until a new blue book comes out and has announced cIMPACT-NOW (the Consortium to Inform Molecular and Practical Approaches to CNS Tumor Taxonomy). The group has released 4 updates in the last 2 years. As the cIMPACT-NOW updates were published, the number of molecular tests required for CNS tumors has increased rapidly. It is not possible to disregard these suggestions as in case of a tumor with low-grade morphology, recurrence and mortality could be seen in a very short time and the pathological diagnosis was far from explaining the condition. Following the updates closely, putting them into practice, and taking the recommendations into consideration have made a great contribution to clinicopathological compliance. The first round has been completed, and working groups are now preparing the second round. A blue book for the new classification is expected to be published by the end of 2020.
