Radiation Therapy and Radiosurgery for Gliomas
Kadir TUFAN1
1Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Adana, Türkiye Gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors. They are tumors originating from the gliacytes of the brain, ranging from benign pilocytic astrocytomas to extremely aggressive glioblastomas. Recent advances at the molecular level have shown that even tumors of the same degree have different behaviors. The treatment protocols for tumors within this mosaic are also rapidly changing. Radiotherapy (RT) was included in the treatment protocol of gliomas immediately after surgery. While the role of RT in standard treatment in glioblastoma (GBM) is not debated, the place of RT in low-grade infiltrative gliomas is still uncertain. In the present article, the indications, efficacy, application doses and techniques of radiotherapy and radiosurgery in different degrees of glial tumors are discussed with the current literature data.
