Incisions are the beginning and the most important guide in surgery. Correct incision not only increases surgical success but is also very important in terms of lowering postoperative complications. There is no single correct incision for surgery and the right incision should be selected by the surgeon"s knowledge and expertise. The incision descriptions provide a suitable corridor for surgery planned in accordance with neighboring anatomical structures. Defining these neighboring anatomical structures and considering the variations in each with the appropriate steps will prevent postoperative complications. Incision choices can also differ with time as the surgeon"s experience grows, new technology develops and newer definition of diseases and anatomic structures ensues. In this article, we reviewed the frequently used basic head and neck incisions in neurosurgical practice with their pros and cons and neighboring anatomical structures.
