1Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Beyin ve Sinir Cerrahisi Anabilim Dalı, Ankara, Türkiye Trauma is the most common cause of mortality, especially in developed countries. Traffic accidents are the most common cause of craniofacial injuries worldwide. The craniofacial region is composed of the viscerocranium and the neurocranium. Traumatic craniofacial fractures require a multidisciplinary approach for treatment and management. Computed tomography is the main tool for the diagnosis and treatment plan. Emergent surgical treatment is indicated in case of increased intracranial pressure (due to subdural, epidural or parenchymal hematomas), severe skull base vascular injury, and open skull fractures with exposed brain parenchyma. The main principle of skull base reconstruction is debridement of the traumatized sinuses to prevent infections. A multidisciplinary approach and treatment are important parameters that determine treatment success in craniofacial injury.
