The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. Pain is a frequent consequence of spinal cord injury. Most studies indicate that about two-thirds of subjects with SCI will experience chronic pain. Around one-third of subjects rate their pain as severe with adverse effects on mood and function. There are many classification systems for pain, and especially for pain after spinal cord injury. This classification can be made as musculoskeletal pain, visceral pain, and neuropathic pain according to the level of injury. In this text, the types of pain that occur after spinal cord injury, and its prevalence, effect and treatments will be briefly reviewed.
